WastesWork is a limited company that specialises in waste analysis projects for local authority and private waste management clients. It was set up in January 2006 by Barrie Knapp and Sarah Knapp Dent, who between them have over 12 years experience in the waste analysis field. Both are held in high regard.

Waste streams that can be analysed by WastesWork include:
  • Kerbside collected household waste and recycling
  • Waste taken by the public to HWRCs
  • Street cleansing - litter and sweepings
  • Beach cleansing
  • Trade waste including school projects
  • Bulky waste collections

In the first six months that the company had been operating projects were won for WRAP, Sheffield Veolia, Fellowes and the LB of Richmond. In addition the company was accepted onto the DEFRA WIP LASU framework contract, winning three projects in the first tranche.

In year two, in partnership with Exodus Research the team won a major piece of work for WRAP. The fieldwork required 12 analysts and covered nine local authorities in England and four in Wales. The aim was to gain a better understanding of the types and quantities of food waste being thrown away at the household level. The data formed the basis of WRAPs Love Food Hate Waste campaign. The WastesWork team were highly praised by both WRAP and the Environment agency for their part in this project and have been nominated for a research award.

Other projects carried out in year two were for:

  • Torbay Council
  • Teignbridge Council
  • Rochford Council
  • East Herts Council
  • Fellowes Ltd
  • Veolia Sheffield
  • WRAP - Schools waste
  • WRAP - food capture rates
  • WRAP - Christmas Special

We are now half way through year three and have carried out large scale projects for Leicestershire, Cheshire and Hackney. The Leicestershire work was won in collaboration with Hyder Consulting.

We also managed our first piece of foreign travel, working with Integrated Skills on a waste analysis project for the Guernsey Government!
